Aroma-Massage
Aromatherapy is one of the fastest growing fields in alternative medicine. It is a holistic approach of care that uses volatile plant materials, known as essential oils, and similar aromatic compounds from plants.
A French surgeon, Jean Valnet, pioneered the medicinal uses of essential oils, which he used as antiseptics in the treatment of wounded soldiers during World War II. Nowadays aromatherapy is widely used at home, clinics and hospitals for a variety of applications. It is mainly used to relieve pain, for skincare, to alleviate tension and fatigue, or simply because of the pleasing scents.
Each essential oil has different healing properties. For example, some calm while others energize. There are about 150 essential oils. Most of them have antiseptic properties. Some are antiviral, anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving, antidepressant or even expectorant.
Essential oils can affect the mood, reduce fatigue and anxiety, and promote relaxation. When inhaled, they work on the brain and nervous system through stimulation of the olfactory nerves by essential oil molecules. Messages are then transmitted to the limbic system, which can then affect the endocrine system (hormones) and the autonomic nervous system (heart rate, stress level, blood pressure, breathing, digestion, etc.). Essential oils are also absorbed through the skin, therefore they are of great interest in massage therapy.
An aroma-massage is a Californian-like massage with the use of essential oils added to a massage oil or lotion. In my practice I use exclusively therapeutic grade essential oils from France, Australia, and the United States (Gary Young, Young Living Essential Oils and Blends) to offer my clients the best quality and effectiveness.
An aroma-massage is particularly effective on these following conditions:
- Stress
- Insomnia
- Headache
- Digestive disorder
- Premenstrual syndrome
- Back pain
- Skin problems
